In an interesting piece by Asiaone news Magazine, Singaporeans at a recent seminar expressed frustration with their government for not doing more to help them improve the condition of its people. The seminar was hosted by the Singapore Association of Retired Persons (ASPOR) and featured several prominent Singaporeans including former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Mr. Wee Yean Ee. Among other participants were members from the Government of Singapore and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The subject of the seminar was the Future of Singapore and specifically, how it could be achieved with government spending being the lowest in the world. One speaker after another raised concerns about the dire poverty and health problems being faced by the elderly in the country. The Minister for Social Development, Mr. Thomas M. Hertz, told the gathering that the Government is "looking into" the issue and that action will be taken. Other panelists suggested the appointment of a minister for senior education, the promotion of vocational schools and the setting up of aid programs for the mentally handicapped.
